Performance
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is built with a 3.3 Liter V6 engine sporting 271 horsepower, so it provides a smooth and comfortable ride. Taking this Cherokee off road is where it excels against the rest of the pack. The 9-speed automatic transmission allows for a seamless shift of power and acceleration. Light towing is a feature of this SUV, too. There's nothing but stability, a smoothed-out ride over potholes and other road issues, and a sense that you are well-cared for as passengers in the Cherokee Overland. I felt very much that everything was under control, and there was plenty of power from the 3.2-liter V6 under the hood. Quite a nice ride.
Fuel Economy
19 city miles/27 highway miles/22 overall miles. 19 city, 27 highway and 22 overall. The Cherokee uses 4.5 gallons of gasoline per 100 miles driven. Annual fuel cost is $1,900 based on15,000 miles of driving annually using gasoline costing $2.80 a gallon. However, you should expect to pay about $2,500 more in gasoline costs over the first five years of ownership compared to the average new vehicle.
The Car
A refresh is in store for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee including a new available 2.0-liter engine and new technology. The design is updated and sleek while the interior is as pristine and as well laid out as ever - well done Jeep! The driving of this vehicle and off-roading is still fun and festive. New this year are standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; a plus is the infotainment system and its ease in usage.

One detraction on this new model is the limited amount of cargo capacity than the competition. Jeep still gets lower than average reliability scores, so this SUV may be a better vehicle to lease than to purchase outright.
Aside from its legendary off-road ability, the Cherokee is a solid, rugged glued to the road SUV, with all of the comforts you would want. This year, the Cherokee, which replaces the old Liberty, gets some much needed redos on the weird headlamps and grille that graced the earlier models. The company took quite a bit of flak from the auto writers on the look of the previous Cherokee's grille. Two other important changes: There's a new extra cost powerplant, a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that has gotten some good reviews, and the infotainment system has come in for some much-needed changes, too.

We suspect that your biggest problem will be trying to pick out which Cherokee you want to purchase. Each makes a pretty good case, and they all have quite different personalities and presentations.

You start with the Latitude, the base model.

You get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 180 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. You can also get an optional 3.2-liter V6 that makes 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque or a 2.0-liter turbo that makes 270 hp and 295 lb-ft. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard with all engines. The Latitude, Limited and Overland are available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the Trailhawk comes standard with all-wheel drive.

Other standard equipment on the Latitude consists of 17-inch wheels, automatic xenon headlights, heated side mirrors, height-adjustable front seats, 60/40-split folding rear seatback, a folding front passenger seat with a storage compartment inside the seat cushion, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, a USB port, a new 7-inch touchscreen interface and a six-speaker audio system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration is standard across the range for 2019.

If you need just a bit more, try on the Latitude Plus for size. The features are things that really make the Cherokee a more comfortable, better equipped product. You get keyless ignition and entry, leather inserts in the upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Satellite radio is standard, as are passive keyless entry with push-button starting and two extra USB ports.

On the Latitude Plus, you can also get a Comfort and Convenience package, which adds features such as an auxiliary household power outlet, dual-zone climate control, a power liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, remote start, and a universal garage door opener.

If you need more power, the turbocharged 2.0-liter and 3.2-liter V6 engines are available as an upgrade for the Latitude Plus and Limited trims.

Our test model was the Overland, whose name pays homage to the old Jeep/Willys brand. It comes standard with the V6, with the option to add the 2.0-liter, and has its own 18-inch wheels, unique body-colored exterior trim, cornering lights, sound-deadening windshield and front windows, driver-seat memory functions, a leather-wrapped instrument panel, wood steering-wheel inserts, upgraded leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable passenger seat, sliding rear seat, a nine-speaker audio system, a navigation system and HD radio.
Aesthetics & Styling
The redesigned 2019 Cherokee Overland 4 x 4 is hauled by 19" Polished Aluminum wheels - a sweet way to stand out. A sleek, attractive front with new LED headlights gives it a more powerful all-around look. The tailgate is with its hands-free opening, also is more streamlined. This is quite a great vehicle and competes well with all the bells and whistles. Especially for drivers who explore the back-roads, the Overland provides guts to lean into with the Active Drive power options. Very cool and rugged looking. And the redo to the front end makes it look just that much more tough. What's neat is that all of the styling details fit right into Jeep family. But there's just enough differentiation with the design that you don't get it mixed up with everything in the Jeep lineup. The quality of materials, presentation, and design of the instrument panel all look high end and are quite up to date in terms of controls, technology, etc. The days when FCA US LLC's predecessor, Chrysler, had products which weren't quite up to quality standards are now long gone and over and done with.
