12 Effective Car Safety Tips for Women
  1. Look around – be aware of your surroundings. Act confident and not aloof, attackers look for “easy” targets.
  2. Park your car as close as you possibly can to the entrance of the building, and parking under a street light or in a well-lit area never hurts.
  3. Get in your car and drive! Don’t sit there balancing your checkbook, talking on the phone, reading, etc... You may be seen as a vulnerable target.
  4. Lock your doors, always.
  5. Don’t keep your windows down all the way, and never roll them completely down for an approaching stranger.
  6. Call 911 if someone asks for assistance.
  7. If a person is sitting in the passenger seat of the neighboring car, they could be waiting for you to unlock your car door before grabbing you. In this instance, enter your car from the passenger side, or return to the building to find an escort to your car.
  8. Keep your keys in your hand, so you are not rustling around for them at your car door. The keys can also be used as a weapon to poke your would-be attacker in the eyes or other soft spots.
  9. A little fresh pepper spray? Yes. This is an easy way to debilitate an attacker. Otherwise, kick, bite and go for the groin!
  10. If your attacker is carrying a weapon, consider whether you should run or fight. Most attackers will want to avoid the hassle if you are willing to stand up for yourself, and many attackers may not even bother to carry a weapon. It’s understandable to not want to take any chances – take a look around and plan an escape route.
  11. Walk out of the building in pairs or groups.
  12. Upon approach, look under your car to make sure it’s clear. Always check the inside of your car and the backseat to make sure there are no surprises. Once you’re inside, lock the door.
